Just get through the goddamn day

So without ruining any storylines here is what I think about some things I have read/seen recently

Cats Cradle, Kurt Vonnegut.
Was brilliant, I was very doubtful that I would like it more than Slaughterhouse 5 but I think I did. I was well into all the bokononism and the short chapters.

A Single Man, Tom Ford.
Was beautiful, it's set over 24 hours of what could be the last day of Colin Firths life. In the opening scenes we learn that Firths lover died in an accident 8 months ago and Firth has decided to put his affairs in order and commit suicide. I interpreted the film as showing the audience that it's the little things in life that it make it worth living which Ford shows using subtle colour changes throughout. The whole film looks wonderful and a cried well loads (a lot due to the beautiful soundtrack) much to my embarrassment. I also really loved the soundtrack, it reminded me a lot of the Fountain but I can't decide if that was a good or bad thing.

Eden Lake, James Watkins.

Eden Lake also made me cry but for pretty different reasons. As a general rule British horror films are probably my favourite, but Japanese are a close second. Anyway, I liked the gritty British harshness of Eden Lake, it wasn't perfect and by the end I was felt there were one too many coincidences which took away from what was otherwise a very real feeling film. Actually I thought it felt quite similar to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre in terms of its tone. In a nutshell, it centres around a couple who go away for a romantic weekend but it's ruined by some chavs. To start with they're just typical chavs, playing loud music and being crude and annoying, but things escalate and get violent. Again, much to my embarrassment I ended up in tears. I definitely won't be antagonising any chavs any time soon, well not that I would anyway, but certainly certainly not now.

Revolutionary Road, Sam Mendes.
I loved it, really really good. It focuses on the marriage of Frank and April Wheeler and the reality of the emptiness of the 'American dream. It's pretty bleak but compelling and brilliantly acted throughout. Michael Shannon is one of my favourite actors and as usual he was perfectly cast as the mentally ill son of Frank and Aprils estate agent.

The last half hour of Push, lord knows who
I caught the last half hour of this dreadful looking film, but seeing as I haven't seen it all I can't judge it too harshly. It involved a bunch of Chinese men having some kind of screaming power that hurt everyones ears and Chris Evans dying and then not dying and having some kind of love interest with what was maybe a robot girl??? I didn't have a clue what was going on but it didn't look great. At least Chris Evans is still hot.

Pi(t)zza, Pearsons and a bottle of wine

is a winning combination. Perplexingly (why isn't Perplexingly a word!?) and annoyingly, the pizza came without any cheese which lead to an interesting metaphysical debate about the defining characteristics of a pizza. As is the case with most metaphysical debate, we failed to yield any conclusive results. If anyone knows of anyone, who can define the haecceity of a pizza, without getting too philosophically tangled in the four-worlds argument for the necessity of origin, or similar, Carly and I would be very much interested in your interpretation.

As there was no photographic evidence of the cheeseless pizza we ate tonight, I shall provide a photo of one of one of the best/biggest pizzas I ever ate instead.

Thank goodness

for Charlie Brooker, a voice of sanity in these mad times. I don't even like thinking about the whole John Terry saga because even the most sensible people I know seemed inexplicably to be in agreement the tabloids, chriiiist. Thank you Charlie, it's good to know I am not alone.

In the west, adultery isn't punished by stoning. Instead, the press will kick you until you beg for forgiveness

One day

I will die and there will be hundreds of books that I would love but never read. This makes me feel pretty sad. Recently I seem to have a lot of 'when I die I won't have done X' thoughts. I thought this was the sort of thing people who have mid life crisis' have, not 22 year old girls.
I thought a possible solution was to attempt to do all these X's I'd regret not doing if I die tomorrow. However, I think this is a) not physically possible for a lot of X's such as the afore mentioned books and b) not possible due to personality restraints.
I'm well loving the Winter Olympics at the moment. I'm pretty sure that the freestyle skiing, pairs figure skating and the super G are my favourite events, but I think I just love everything. The finals for pairs figure skating were amazing this year. I wish I could skate :( they look like they are flying, it's so beautiful to watch. On the downside, watching all the skiers is making me green with envy, I want to be skiing down a mountain :(:(

Apart from being excited about the Winter Olympics I am also super super excited about a special edition Twin Peaks season 2 boxset. Sadly it is £34.99 at hmv or £34.48 from amazon. You can also get a definitive season 1 and 2 GOLD boxset for £50.00

here it is in all its golden glory:

To celebrate the possibility of actaully having season 2 on DVD and not my rubbish illegal copy, I might re-watch season 1, exciting!

What else is exciting is that I ordered a splitzer for my LC-A+

And speaking of cameras, because its amazingly sunny AND snowy today I am going to get dressed and go out to take some ace photos :)

Thursday 11 February 2010

Also,

What was going on with Deal or No Deal today?! Noel was dressed as (I assume) Zeus, it was all very exciting everyone else seemed to be standard ancient Greeks. The 'male model' (really!?) whos go it was Did pretty well, I liked his stupid wig. I would like to go to a Greek god themed party, I would 100% dress up as Poseidon, he's my favourite god. But a close second would be Artemis, I love the moon. If I was Artemis I could get someone to go as my twin Apollo. Hopefully someone would go as Pegasus or Hades as they are both pretty good too. Oooh and some people involved in a sordid love triangle could go as Hephaistos, Ares and Aphrodite. The venue could decorated as Mount Olympus and we could pretend that wine was ambrosia. It would definitely be ace.

Haha, if I was Poseidon I'm not sure how I would dress as he doesn't really wear much, I guess it would have to be a less literal interpretation. I could wear my blue wig again.

They're gonna eat me alive

I am massively scared about my interview with Ashurst tomorrow. Things I am hoping for:

1. My shoes don't rub
2. They like me
3. There won't be any awful long silences where I can't remember what I'm trying to say
4. They will ask me nice questions that I have prepared an answer for
5. Jessica from HR is as nice as she sounds on the phone
6. I don't fall over while I am in the building
7. I hope my stupid fucking stutter doesn't make an appearance
8. The trains do not let me down and I will be there on time
9. I don't laugh excessively
10. They will offer me the job on the spot. YEAHRIGHT

Wednesday 3 February 2010

Eeek

I have a job interview with the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies in London for the graduate librarian post. For about 1 second I was pretty happy and then I was terrified, scary times.

As if

I forgot Hexxus from Fern Gully!! Yesterday I brought it from HMV for the small price of £3 and then Carly and I ran home to watch it. So anyway

6. Hexxus. He's ace, I think this pretty much sums it up:

I don't know if the Batty rap is better than Toxic Love, but either way, both are fantastic.

After we watched Fern Gully Jon came over and we watched Homeward Bound which was definitely still as good as when you watch it as a child. After that we went to Ollies and then Hels took me home and everyone else went to Priors. Overall, A+ day

Villains

Bored of writing my application for the Graduate librarian position at the Met office and killing time before I have to leave for work I decided to compile a list of some of my favourite film villains.

1. Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty and her familiar/pet raven, Diablo

Maleficent is my favourite Disney Villain, although Jafar/Iago are very close second.

2. Hans Gruber from Die Hard

I knew Alan Rickman would definitely be in my list but I couldn't decide what for, Snape and the Sheriff of Nottingham were close contenders, but ultimately, it's gotta be Hans.

3. Carl Showalter from Fargo

I love Steve so much, it breaks my heart when he ends up in the wood chipper :(

4. Roy from Blade Runner

Blade Runner is generally awesome but Rutger Hauer as leader of the Nexus-6 replicants is totally amazing. Also Roy gets two photos because the bit when he sticks his head through the wall is dead ace.

5. The Velociraptors from Jurassic Park

That kitchen scene is full on intense.
